Where You Watch the Newport Beach Boat Parade Decides What Time Your Night Starts

November 5, 2026

At about 6:30 p.m. each night from Wednesday, December 16, through Sunday, December 20, the first boats of the 118th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade leave the tip of Lido Isle. They come back to the same spot between 9:00 and 9:30. The route covers 14 miles of Newport Harbor with more than 100 decorated yachts and boats. If you watch from the bayfront on Lido Isle, your evening is close to over before someone on Balboa Island sees a single light.

So the parade passes each point on the water at a different hour, and that hour shapes the rest of the night: when you book dinner, which drone show you can see before the boats arrive, and which night is worth the trouble. The Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce hosts the event again this year. The planning starts with its timetable.

The Clock, Stop by Stop

The full route schedule lists 38 checkpoints. These are the ones most people use as viewing spots or dinner reservations:

Approximate pass time Stop
6:30 p.m. Tip of Lido Isle, start
6:43 p.m. Lido Peninsula / Rhine Channel
6:49 p.m. Marina Park
6:52 p.m. Lighthouse Cafe
7:00 p.m. 15th Street Beach
7:04 p.m. 10th Street Beach
7:07 p.m. Newport Harbor Yacht Club
7:15 p.m. Harborside Restaurant
7:29 p.m. Peninsula Point Beach
7:43 p.m. Balboa Island Bridge
7:58 p.m. Balboa Island Ferry Landing
8:05 p.m. Balboa Island Bayfront
8:24 p.m. PCH Bridge
8:34 p.m. Balboa Bay Club and Balboa Bay Resort
8:45 p.m. The Winery Restaurant
8:50 p.m. Lido Marina Village
9:00–9:30 p.m. Tip of Lido Isle, finish

Marina Park sees the fleet about two hours before Lido Marina Village does. The Balboa Island Ferry Landing falls between the two, at roughly 8 p.m. That gap is the reason to pick a spot first and plan dinner around it. A 5 p.m. table near Marina Park leaves time to finish dinner before the boats pass at 6:49. The same booking in Lido Marina Village leaves you nearly four hours to fill.

Marina Park, at 1600 W. Balboa Blvd., is the largest public viewing area on the route. Admission is free, and the 10.5-acre park has a playground, a picnic area and a sailing center. It is the first public stop after Lido, which makes it the early-evening choice for anyone with small children or an early bedtime.

Match Your Spot to the Drone Show

Once you know when the boats will arrive, you know which drone show you can catch. The parade organizers schedule two shows every night at each of two places, one at each end of the harbor.

  • Balboa Bay Club: 6:15 and 8:15 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. On opening night the early show starts at 6:00.
  • Peninsula Park near the Fun Zone: 6:45 and 8:00 p.m. all five nights.

The 8:15 show over Balboa Bay Club starts about 20 minutes before the parade reaches the club at 8:34. If you watch from that end of the harbor, you can see the drones and then the boats from the same spot. At the Peninsula end, the 6:45 show runs ahead of the parade's 7:15 pass at Harborside Restaurant. The 8:00 show comes after the boats have moved on toward Balboa Island. Late spots work well with the late drone show, and early spots work well with the early one.

Opening Night Runs on a Different Schedule

Of the five nights, Wednesday, December 16, offers the most. It is the only night with fireworks, launched off Newport Pier at about 6:15 p.m. if federal, state and local safety guidelines allow. Marina Park hosts the kickoff that afternoon: an opening ceremony, then the fourth annual Holiday Market, run in partnership with Vogels Vibes. More than 35 local makers and food vendors will be there, along with live music, photo spots and activities for children.

The opening-night schedule runs on tight timing:

  1. 4:00 p.m. The event opens and the Holiday Market starts.
  2. 6:15 p.m. Fireworks off Newport Pier.
  3. 6:45 p.m. The parade sails past Marina Park.
  4. 8:00 p.m. The market closes.

The opening-night event is free. It also comes nine days before Christmas, so you can pick up a few gifts and still be in position when the first boats come around from Lido.

On the Water, Friday and Saturday Cost More

To watch from a boat, the cruise schedule posted at christmasparadeboats.com lists three parade departures each night: 5:30 to 6:50 p.m., 7:05 to 8:15 p.m. and 8:30 to 9:50 p.m. Prices depend on the night:

Night Adult Junior
Wed. Dec. 16, Thu. Dec. 17, Sun. Dec. 20 $47 $43
Fri. Dec. 18, Sat. Dec. 19 $62 $57

An adult ticket on Friday or Saturday costs $15 more than the same cruise on Thursday. The parade is the same, and the boats light up the same harbor. Thursday and Sunday are the best value, and opening night adds the fireworks for no extra charge. The operator says prices and departures may change without notice and asks groups of 10 or more to call (949) 675-0551.

The same operator runs Holiday Lights Cruises on the nights before and after the parade, from November 27 through December 15 and December 21 through January 2. Tickets are $40 for adults and $36 for juniors, with departures at 5:30, 7:00 and 8:30 p.m. The first of those sailings sets out the day after Thanksgiving, which works well if family is still in town.

Dinner Tables Come With Deadlines

Waterfront restaurants schedule parade nights around the timetable too. Their policies show how much demand each spot gets.

Lighthouse shares parking with Marina Park and is one of the first restaurants the parade passes. It takes parade reservations only through its management team. Each guest pays a $50 deposit, which counts toward a $50-per-person food and beverage minimum. Tax and an automatic 20% service charge are added on top. Dinner seatings start at 5 p.m. Cancellations made less than seven days ahead, and no-shows, are charged $50 per person. The restaurant says traffic and parking trouble do not count as exceptions.

Later in the evening, Billy's at the Beach serves a three-course, Hawaiian-inspired prix fixe for $100 per person, plus tax and gratuity, all five nights. Christmas carolers take requests. The restaurant expects the parade at about 8:44 p.m. and recommends seating no later than 8:20. That is close to the 8:45 time listed for The Winery Restaurant on the official route.

At Balboa Bay Resort, A+O Restaurant | Bar applies special reservation policies and food and beverage minimums from 5 p.m. to close on every parade night, according to Visit Newport Beach.

The official dine and watch directory also lists Newport Landing Restaurant, Harborside Restaurant, The Winery Restaurant and Wine Bar, and the Lido Marina Village restaurants, including Malibu Farm and Lido Bottle Works. The organizers say the waterfront rooms fill early.

Getting to the Water

A spot only works if you can get there on time. The organizers say city lots and street parking along the route are available, warn that lots fill quickly and suggest arriving early. Marina Park has 177 spaces. Visit Newport Beach's event page says the Marina Park lot will be closed to the public on opening night, with parking on the street and in nearby lots. For current parking details, the Chamber's number is (949) 729-4400.

Lighthouse says the Peninsula gets heavily congested every parade night and recommends Uber, Lyft, a taxi or other alternate transportation. The city's Balboa Peninsula Trolley finished its season on September 7 and does not run in December. The Balboa Island Ferry runs from 6:30 a.m. to midnight every day of the year, so it keeps running past the parade's 7:58 p.m. pass at its own landing. If you live on the island, you are among the last to see the boats.

The Houses on the Route Are Judged Two Days Earlier

If your home faces the water, the parade calendar starts before December 16. The Ring of Lights decorating competition is open to waterfront homes, businesses and yacht clubs. Entry costs $35, registration closes at noon on Friday, December 11, and judging is on Monday, December 14. That means a decorated dock has to be finished two days before the first boats leave Lido. Entrants receive commemorative items and are eligible for awards. Visit Newport Beach suggests walking Balboa Island and Balboa Village to see the decorated homes. The same page points to boat charters and rentals as another way to see them.

Planning a Newport Harbor holiday means working out where the boats will be at a given hour. Choosing a home works much the same way, and the small details matter as much as the address. If you are weighing a waterfront place on Lido, Balboa Island or the Peninsula, or a second home in the desert, Nicole Cox knows both places well. Schedule a consultation and we will talk through which spot fits the way you spend your evenings.
